WEY TO ROW - the Weyfarers Beginners' Rowing Course
PROVISIONAL COURSE TIMETABLE
WHY SHOULD IT DO IT? You'll get fitter, make new friends, and have FUN WHO IS IT FOR? Anyone from 18 to 80 can join (we do separate sessions for juniors). No prior experience of rowing is required. You just need to be able to swim 150 metres in light clothing. WHAT WILL I LEARN? We will teach you the basics of sculling (with 2 oars) and rowing (with 1 oar) and introduce you to coxing. We will cover safety, boat handling, and improving general fitness. We may also have sessions on nutrition or other topics. You will be given a course handbook to remind you of what you have learned! WHO WILL BE TEACHING ME? The course has been designed by Caroline Turnbull, who is an ARA qualified Bronze Award coach, and Coach Educator (which means she also coaches the coaches). Caroline also holds a Level 2 Fitness Instructor award and level 3 Nutrition Advisor award. The other coaches hold Bronze or Level 2 rowing coaching awards, or have many years rowing and coaching experience. HOW IS THE COURSE RUN? There will be two sessions per week, some on land (using rowing machines) but most on the water. Our coach/ participant ratio will generally be 1 to 4, so the course is limited to 8 people. We will teach you in wide, stable boats, with either 2 or 4 people rowing. Towards the end of the course we will move to a racing eight or four. WHEN IS IT? Our beginners' rowing course lasts 4 weeks, with 2 sessions per week on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. WHERE? Weyfarers Rowing Club, Thames Lock, Jessamy Road, Weybridge, KT13 8LG. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? The 4 week course costs £80, which includes temporary membership (so that you are covered by the Club's insurance) and course handbook. We ask for £25 on registration and the remaining £55 at the end of the first session. HOW DO I ENROL? Download an application form, email us at weyfarers@aol.com or phone CarolineTurnbull on 01932 340108. Completed forms, together with your £25 registration fee, should be returned by 23rd May. WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF THE COURSE? We hope you will be bitten by the bug and carry on rowing with us! If you just want to keep fit and enjoy the river with your new friends you can continue with Weyfarers. Members meet on Saturday and Sunday mornings for a leisurely row from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, followed by refreshment in the bar. They also organise and take part in rowing tours in this country and abroad. If you decide you want to row seriously and race, you can join Weybridge Rowing Club. Members train at least 4 times a week (Saturday, Sunday plus a minimum of two evenings). Membership of Weybridge costs £240 p.a. and Weyfarers £120 p.a. This includes use of all equipment and ongoing coaching, though some sessions may be unsupervised.
